This new washroom is located near the Needham Street entrance of Fort Needham Park. The project is designed to achieve net-zero energy as required for HRM corporate buildings under HalifACT. Renewable energy is being generated from a 8.5 kW Solar PV array located on the roof of the building. This new facility designed with 2 barrier free washrooms stalls and 2 single toilet stalls. M&R Engineering were responsible for Mechanical and Electrical design services included energy modeling for Solar PV sizing and construction administration.

Key Facts:

  • Building envelope includes double glazed windows, R-25 walls & R-40 roof.

  • Fresh air and exhaust is provided with a high efficiency energy recovery ventilator, up to 77% sensible heat recovery and 60% latent energy recovery, it operates based on an occupancy sensor installed in the building.

  • Heating is accomplished with all electric infloor heat

  • A 8.5 kW solar photovoltaic (PV) array offsets all energy use in the building

  • High efficiency LED lights and occupancy sensors

  • Hybrid heat pump domestic water heater
