The Northeast Nova Scotia Correctional Facility (NNSCF) is a state of the art direct supervision facility with a capacity of 196 offenders and a staffing complement of 138 employees. 

M&R Engineering was responsible for mechanical design including HVAC, Plumbing and Fire Protection as well as electrical design including Lighting, Power, Communications and Security and Sustainability Consulting (LEED Point Documentation and Energy Modeling).

Key facts:

  • Geothermal water-to-water heat pumps provide in-floor heating and preheat domestic water

  • Geothermal water-to-air heat pumps are incorporated into the air handling units to provide heating and cooling

  • 51 closed loop bore holes, each 600ft deep provide heat exchange with the earth

  • An electric boiler provides backup capacity

  • Pumps and fans are fitted with variable frequency drives to reduce energy use

  • Ventilation air heat recovery is preheats ventilation air
