This new Hospice, designed to CSA Z317, is the first Hospice Residence in Nova Scotia. It was also designed to meet the PHIUS Passive House certification program.  This new facility houses (10) beds with washrooms, central laundry facility, commercial kitchen, living room, children’s room, office, break room, spa, centre of excellence, elevator along with associated storage and utility rooms.  Mechanical and electrical services included schematic design, design development, energy modeling for Passive House and utility incentives and construction administration.

Key Facts: 

  • Its high performance building envelope includes triple glazed (U-0.16) windows, R-80 roof and R-26 walls. A blower door test was performed to confirm air tightness.

  • All ventilation system operate at 100% outdoor air with enthalpy heat recovery and EC motor fans.

  • Heating and cooling is accomplished with variable speed multi-split air-source heat pumps

  • 150kW emergency generator

  • High efficiency LED lights and occupancy sensors

  • 11.5kW solar photovoltaic (PV) system

  • Energy modeling indicated 65% energy savings compared to the energy code (2015 NECB)
